In recognition of the School of Letters' 20th anniversary, donors of $250 or more will receive a commemorative Sewanee print by acclaimed photographer Stephen Alvarez, C'87, P'20, P'22.

The anniversary print captures both the beauty of place and the creative spirit that continues to define Sewanee.

Behind the Scenes from Stephen Alvarez:

"The School of Letters commissioned me in September 2012. April and I talked about creating an image that would define the identity of the School of Letters. We wanted an image that spoke to Sewanee's beauty, and quiet spaces, and in the University’s deep, deep roots in place.

I long had an image in mind of the Shapard and Breslin towers rising above the forest that I thought would speak to all those things.

I made the picture by climbing up the Sewanee water tower, and let me be very clear— with permission—before dawn. So I strapped into a safety harness, and photographed just before the sun rose that morning.

Obviously I had a long lens to compress the towers against the forest.

As I saw it come together, I thought, this says visually what I want people to feel when they think about this place and this program, the School of Letters."
