On September 10, Dr. Beverly Daniel Tatum visited Sewanee for a moderated conversation with Cassie Meyer, director of Dialogue Across Difference Programs in the Office of Civic Engagement. Approximately 200 faculty, students, staff, and community members attended the event, titled "The Cost of Silence: Conversations on Race and Community." Tatum, a clinical psychologist, is president emerita of Spelman College and author of several books, including the best-selling Why Are All the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria? and Other Conversations About Race (now its 20th anniversary edition). Tatum also met with student leaders and with faculty and staff while she was on campus. Her visit was sponsored by Provost Nancy Berner, Dean Terry Papillon, Dean Marichal Gentry, the Office of Civic Engagement and Dialogue Across Difference Programs, University Lectures Committee, Center for Teaching, Center for Speaking and Listening, Women's and Gender Studies, Department of Psychology, and the Roberson Project on Slavery, Race, and Reconciliation.
