Curriculum Overview
Students in the MA program prepare themselves broadly, completing courses in British and American literature.
Our MA program is designed for the devoted scholar, providing a broad spectrum of courses taught by leading faculty from distinguished institutions.
Donna Brewer, Associate Professor of English | Winchester, TN
Since earning her MA at the School of Letters, Donna now shepherds college students through everyone from Shakespeare to Twain. She was awarded a fellowship from the English-Speaking Union of Nashville to study at Shakespeare's Globe in London and has presented at the Shakespeare Association of America conference. But the School of Letters did more than hone Donna's academic writing. "I had never flexed my creative muscles in the literary realm until Sewanee. Suddenly, everything seemed possible, surrounded by eager students and expert faculty to sharpen my efforts and challenge me to test my boundaries." Donna is working on her first memoir.
Our program is designed to be flexible, yet rigorous. MA students complete coursework in four residential summers in Sewanee, Tennessee.
MA students will take eight courses, normally enrolling in two courses each summer. Curriculum consists of a combination of courses in literary criticism and writing workshops.
Following their final summer of coursework, MA students may choose to complete a thesis project or return to campus the following summer for two additional courses. MA students who choose the thesis option work closely with an advisor to complete and defend their project.
